What is IGCSE?

IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education and it’s like other boards CBSE, ICSE and also equivalent to state educational boards of India.

IGSCE formed in the year 1988 and it’s established by University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).

IGCSE offers international qualification of study for 5 to 19 years aged students, including two year comprehensive programmes for Class 9 and Class 10.

IGCSE is one of rigorous academic curriculum which is followed internationally to prepare students at innumerable outlooks. This international curriculum has turnout many popular national curricula.

IGCSE Programmes and Curriculum

At the end of Grade 5, students appear for Cambridge International Primary Achievement Test. Students are given the certificate “Primary Certificate of Achievement” by University of Cambridge International Examinations.

  • Checkpoint I, II and III for students aged 11 to 14 years (Grade 6 to Grade 8)

At the end of this program, students appear for Checkpoint Test. This test students ability in English, Maths and Science. After passing Checkpoint, students move to IGCSE.

  • IGCSE I & II for the students aged 14 to 16 years (Grade 9 & Grade 10)

The IGCSE curriculum gives various routes to the students’ knowledge. There are 70 subjects and 30 languages are made available to the students and they can choose in any combination they want.

Obviously, these syllabuses must have international frameworks, but it can be retained in local relevance. Since IGCSE offers core and extended curriculum in view of examination the extended curriculum is about the specialization subjects and that is suitable for those who achieve grades A+ to G. The core curriculum is an overview of the subject and is suitable for students who are expected to achieve grades C to G.

How Examination is conducted in IGCSE?

The assessment of IGCSE is conducted by two UK boards: Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel (also known as London Examinations). The final examinations are steered every year in the month of May and November.

Well! The assessment part is not limited with written and practical exams, actually it goes beyond that, by including other variety tests like oral and listening tests. The assessment grading is ranging from A+ to G, where the A+ is highest grade that students can get.

In examination, each subject indicates the grade, If the student able to score ‘C’ or higher grade, then he/she eligible to pursue class 12 level qualification, at CBSE, IB Diploma, Advanced Placement Diploma, etc.

What is the curriculum of IGCSE?

If you want to know about IGCSE, then you should also know about International Certificate of Education (ICE) in IGCSE.

The ICE is considered more valuable than IGCSE standard. Because the award provided in that way, when a student attempts and passes seven or more paper, then he/she will be awarded the ICE. Instead only five papers need to be cleared to get IGCSE qualification.

  • IGCSE AS/A Level (Grade 11 and Grade 12)

It is IGCSE Advance Level and Advance Subsidiary Level (AS/A Level). AS Level is equivalent to Grade 11 and A Level is equivalent to Grade 12 Level.

In the part of school education the students can take at any stage of IGCSE or they can also focus on specific stages. On the whole IGCSE offers a full supportive, carefully designed curriculum and classroom resources.
